Jose Carlos Rafart


Born in Havana on March 20, 1946. He studied at the San Alejandro Academy of Plastic Arts, later dedicating himself to Goldsmithing and Metal Sculptures. He has been exhibiting individually since 1962, his professional experience is supported by numerous personal and group exhibitions held in Cuba and abroad.

In his teaching work, he has been a professor of Sculpture and Ceramics at the “Plaza de la Revolución” House of Culture, and has given seminars and workshops on the art of goldsmithing in different countries.

Some of his works are located in cultural and social institutions such as the Paula Church along with other renowned artists, in the Miramar Trade Center where he has two large copper murals. In 1996, Pope John Paul II received from the President of the Cuban State, Commander Fidel Castro, his work titled “Nautilus”, by others also called The Birth of the World. During his official visit to Cuba in 2001, the President of the Republic of China Jian Zeming received one of his works at the Melia Varadero Hotel.

Other of his pieces have been sold at auctions by the prestigious houses of Sotheby's and Christie's. His work appears in important public collections such as those of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba, the Vatican City Museum and private collections of countries such as: Argentina, Germany, Spain, United States, France, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Mexico, Panama, Poland, Puerto Rico, Italy, England, Switzerland.
